Champ Franklin’s story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of education. Growing up on the West Side of Chicago, Champ faced unimaginable challenges. At just 12 years old, he became the primary caregiver for his quadriplegic father, who had been shot. Despite the turmoil, including exposure to gangs and violence, Champ’s intelligence and athleticism shone through. His passion for baseball and wrestling were bright spots in a high school career marred by a 1.9 GPA, which wasn’t enough to qualify for college.
Refusing to let his circumstances define him, Champ joined the military immediately after high school. It was on the quarterdeck of Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan, in 1993, that he launched his educational journey. Eight years later, Champ earned a BS in Healthcare Management from Southern Illinois University, followed by a Master’s degree in Health Management from Marymount University. His hard work and perseverance earned him a commission as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy.
Champ’s military career took him around the globe, with duty stations including the USS Enterprise, Kandahar, Afghanistan, Yokosuka and Okinawa, Japan, and Bethesda, Maryland. He has visited more than 30 countries, gaining invaluable experiences and insights.
